With the issues I have with using Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and now more and more with Windows XP, I have switched over to using Linux to play neverwinter nights. I have always used what operating system that is appropriate for what needs to be accomplished. You can set up your computer to dual boot so when it loads you can choose whether to enter Linux or Windows. I am currently running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS which has no problem with running the game. I am going to try to give a down and dirty on how I did this.
This guide is based on Ubuntu and GOG version of NWN
1. Make a boot able usb drive with the Linux install files on it. If you follow the directions on Ubuntu web page, it is real easy to do.
2. When Linux is installed, you want to go to PlayOnLinux website https://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html and download the appropriate file for whatever flavor of Linux you are using. When you click on the downloaded file, it should open your software installer program and install everything you need.
3. Downloaded the three install files from gog. They should download to your download folder in your home directory.
4. Open PlayOnLinux. If it needs files, they you prompt you to download.
5. Click on the install a new program and find GOG NWN link in the Game section. Follow all on screen prompt so that it can build the game and the windows scripts it needs to be able to run it.
6. You will have a new folder in your home folder called PlayOnLinux Virtual Drive. If you go into the file folder, it should resemble the same layout that you are used to with windows.
7. Download and unzip all files like you would normally except PRC. prc rar doesn't work with linux unzip program. Download the .exe version and use the unzip program,, navigate to the hak folder, and grab the hak from there.
This post is probably written bad and incomplete but I am noticing that windows is becoming a problem more and more with the game and I want people to be able to enjoy the playing the game hassle free, not including the install/setup process. Sometimes I do experience a lag issue when playing over Wi-Fi but when a ethernet cable it is great.
